Initial Project Ideas

The graduation project is kind of infamous in the sense that everyone knows about and it is sort of feared in a way because it basically takes up two years of your life and if you start you just can't change things up halfway through. I know a few former seniors who have graduated and completed their projects but they mostly said that it wasn't that bad because it was about something they were really interested in. This fact sort of scared me because I can never think of anything that interests me, I struggle with that.I have several possible topics for a graduation project. I am sort of leaning toward the process of writing, directing and producing a play. But I have other interests as well, such as endocrinology, internal medicine, doctor assisted suicide. I could structure a project around most any of these things. The biggest concern I have about my grad project is that I'll pick the wrong topic and end up dreading the project instead of enjoying it. Another concern I have is that I won't meet the deadline.

Just had a quick, cursory conversation with Mr. Ringold. He said the play must be of a very high quality. He has had submissions in the past, but the group has never put on a student-written play.

Have your own chat with him. This obviously don't close the door, but it should raise a red flag for how you proceed from here.

I think you could do it, you're a very good writer and you seem to have a knack for drama. Though it seems to be up to Mr. Ringold

Actor - a person who performs in a play
Audience - the people who go to a theater to see a play being performed
Blocking - the movements and the actions the actor makes on stage
Cast - the group of actors performing a specific play
Casting - the act of putting different actors into different roles in a play, usually based off of an audition
Character - a person in the play who is portrayed by an actor
Company - company is another word for cast
Crew - the crew works behind the scenes, making sets and setting up the stage both before the performance starts and during the performance whenever there is a scene change
Cue - is usually a line said by an actor that prompts the stage crew to either change the lighting, play a sound, or change a scene
Director - the person who tells the actor of a play what to do so that the production is ready to be performed
Dress Rehearsal - when the actors practice performing the play as if they were actually performing it, there is no use of a script, the actors are in costume and perform with all of the sound and light crews, the director keeps all note that they may have until the performance is finished
Playwright - a person who writes a play
Props - anything that an actor will need during the performance ex: pen, book, cups etc
Read-Through - when the actors just read the script without doing any blocking
Rehearsal - a time before the final production where the actors and the director practice performing the play
Run-Through - when actors run through the entire play including blocking usually done without the use of scripts, the director will stop the play and give notes as they see neccessary
Script - the play itself in print of the actor's lines and stage directions
Set - everything on the stage during a performance excluding the actors especially the background
Stage Manager - controls everything behind the scenes including lighting and sound cues
Theater - a place in which a play is performed, usually contains a stage, a backstage, seating area, and a dressing room or an actor's lounge
